The Abbeyglen Castle was built in 1832 by John d’Arcy of Clifden Castel.  In 1854 it was bought by the Irish Church Mission Society for use as a Protestant orphanage, and in 1953 it became a mixed orphanage until closing and falling derelict in 1955.  In 1969 the Hughes family took over and developed the Abbeyglen Castle into the luxury hotel it is today.
